CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

BAKARI HAD JUST RETIRED to his room at an inn on the outskirts of Thera. Delia had pushed them hard for three days. A zeal in her attitude and gleam in her eye told Bakari that she knew something she wasn’t sharing with them. After Alli had reported back to him, he figured it must be that she had orchestrated Gabby’s capture. Rather than confront Delia directly, Bakari had counseled with Alli and Jaimon and determined the best course of action would be to keep an eye on Delia and to find out what the full plan was. He was hoping she would lead them to Gabby.

Now that they were close to Thera, the capital city of Turg, Delia told them it would be best to rest there tonight and enter the city the following morning. She had left after getting rooms for the three of them. It was her kingdom, and with the power she wielded here, Bakari didn’t have much reason to stop her from going.

Bakari had taken his cloak off and was now sitting down on the bed and unlacing his boots when he heard voices outside of the window. He dismissed the noise for a moment, but then he heard yells and shouts.

He stood back up before taking his boots off and walked to a small window. Opening the shutters, he poked his head outside. A cool breeze from the bay on the other side of Thera blew into the room. A mob of at least thirty men, women, and children, were crowding the front door of the inn, but two guards Delia had left behind blocked their way.

“There he is!” yelled a woman, pointing up at Bakari. “There’s the Dragon King.”

Bakari took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He was tired and sore from riding all day and just wanted to rest, something that was getting more difficult to do since taking on the mantle of king. He put on his best smile, leaned farther out, and waved at the crowd.

As one, they moved over beneath the window.

“Hail the Dragon King!” shouted a man.

“Hail the Dragon King!” echoed many in the crowd.

A soft knock sounded on Bakari’s door behind him, and he turned around when it slowly opened.

“Followers of the Dragon,” Alli said, joining him at the window. “Word is spreading fast that you’re here.”

“Hail, Dragon Rider!” shouted another, pointing up at Alli.

“Oh no!” she groaned. “And I wanted a good night’s rest.”

Armed men with the town guard came toward the group and tried to usher them away from the inn. One follower tore away from the crowd and raced back toward the inn. “We will find the golden dragon for you, my Lord!” the man said with a clear voice. “Then all the artifacts will be yours.”

Bakari grabbed the ledge of the window sill. “The golden dragon,” he muttered.

“Bak, what’s wrong?” Alli asked. “You look sick.”

The town watch down below pulled the follower back with the rest of the crowd and tried to herd everyone down the street somewhere.
